How to read this: each box is one day of the trip. A filled box is a national public holiday in Japan.

The whole world on the same days

On Sat 1 May, the busiest day of the trip, 69.2 of every 100 people on Earth — 5.78 billion — live in a country with a national public holiday. The largest is China, for Labor Day.

  1. Thu 29 Apr 3 of 100 Japan: Showa Day
  2. Fri 30 Apr 4 of 100 Ethiopia: Good Friday
  3. Sat 1 May 69 of 100 China: Labor Day

How to read this: each square is one in every hundred people on Earth, filled if their country has a national public holiday on the busiest day. Each bar is the same for one day of the trip, with the largest country on holiday beside it.

What this cannot tell you

  • Regional holidays. Only national public holidays are counted. Days kept in one state, province or city, and religious days that are not national holidays, are not here.
  • Moving dates. Holidays that follow the moon or are set each year by decree are the calendar’s best reckoning; a government can still move them. Check before you book.
  • Every country. Kosovo and Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba have no calendar here, and Ukraine has no national public holidays in these years: they are suspended under martial law.
  • Before 2026 or after 2030. The calendar covers those five years.

Sources and method

The holidays are the open holidays calendar (a Python library, MIT licence): national public holidays only, for 2026–2030. The people are the UN's population of each country (World Population Prospects 2024), counted at noon on each day. "Of every 100 people on Earth" adds up everyone who lives in a country with a holiday that day.
