Where every number comes from

Every number on this site comes from one of these 51 sources. Each one allows its data to be used on a site like this one, and each is listed with its licence, where to find it, how to cite it, and the pages that draw it.

What censuswall changes. The figures are redrawn, not reproduced: pictures, tables and words are made here, and many numbers are our own arithmetic on a source's figures (per person, shares and "of every 100", sums over ages or years, ranks, rounding). Where a page divides one source by another, it says so beside the figure.

No endorsement. Naming a source here does not mean it endorses censuswall. The United Nations, UN DESA and every other producer listed below have not reviewed or approved this site.

Named, but not drawn here

The site carries no advertising, so a licence that allows only non-commercial use is no bar, and several such sources are drawn and credited above. These are different: their terms bar redrawing altogether, or the question has been asked and not answered, or the figure is quoted somewhere else on the site but the full record is not drawn. Pages name them where a reader would expect them, and they are listed here too.

  • World Health Organization, Global Health Estimates: causes of death for every country. It may be drawn and credited, but never reprinted as a table, and the cause-of-death picture on Health is a table, age by age. The home page draws its world figures as a picture, which those terms allow. Named on health; free to read at who.int.
  • IHME, Global Burden of Disease: causes of death and illness for every country. Licensed CC BY-NC-ND: the ND bars redrawing it at all, on any site. Named on health; free to read at vizhub.healthdata.org.
  • Maternal deaths (WHO-based series): deaths in pregnancy and childbirth. The only long series we have mixes in a WHO series that has not been cleared for use here. The world's current figure is on the home page, from WHO's own fact sheet. Named on health; free to read at who.int.
  • WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme: safe water and sanitation. We have asked whether the full record may be reprinted here; no answer yet. The home page quotes its headline figure for people without safe water at home. Named on living; free to read at washdata.org.
  • World Bank, access to clean cooking: people who cook with clean fuels. It is published on different terms from the rest of the Bank's data, so the fetch refuses it. Named on living; free to read at data.worldbank.org.
  • Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre: a larger count of people displaced inside their own country. Its terms of use are not settled, so the larger count is named here and never drawn. Named on displacement; free to read at internal-displacement.org.
  • UNRWA: Palestine refugees registered since 1952. A separate register, not yet cleared for use here. Named on displacement; free to read at unrwa.org.
  • Berkeley Earth: temperature records for each country. Not cleared for use here, so every temperature on the site is the world average. Named on climate; free to read at berkeleyearth.org.
  • EM-DAT: floods, storms, droughts and other disasters. Not drawn here; the earthquakes on this site are counted from the USGS record instead. Named on climate; free to read at emdat.be.
