Name that pyramid

A country's people, drawn by age: the youngest at the bottom, the oldest at the top, men on the left, women on the right. A wide base means many children. From the shape alone, which country is it?

How to read this: each bar is five years of age, 0 at the bottom, 100 and over at the top. Its length is that age's share of all the people, so the shape shows how old the country is, not how big.

What this cannot tell you

  • How many people. Each pyramid is drawn to its own widest band, so a small country and a large one look the same size. Only the shape is a clue.
  • Anything projected. Every pyramid is a year the UN has estimated (2023 or earlier), never a projection.
  • Your score, anywhere else. Your best score is kept on this device only and never sent.

Sources and method

Each pyramid is the UN's World Population Prospects 2024 estimate for that country and year, by single year of age, added into five-year bands: the same numbers the country's own page draws. A build check compares every pyramid with the country's data. The options are chosen so that no two look alike: every wrong answer differs from the right one by at least 12 of every 100 people placed in another age band.
