Latvia in numbers

Latvia had 1,882,396 people in mid-2023, the 150th-largest population of the 236 countries and areas the UN reports, and 0.02% of the world's people. That is about as many as in 1950 (1.9 million).

Its population peaked in 1989 at 2.7 million and has been falling since. The UN's medium projection has 925 thousand in 2100. The projection is uncertain: on 1 January 2100 the UN's 95% range runs from 238 thousand to 2.9 million.

Deaths have outnumbered births every year since 1992, and do so in every projected year to 2100.

The median age was 30.2 in 1950 and 44.1 in 2023; the projection has 54.2 in 2100. 21.3% of people were 65 or older in 2023, against 36.1% projected for 2100. The working-age population (15–64) peaked in 1989 at 1.8 million; in 2023 it was 1.2 million.

By size it is the 150th country in 2023; the projection puts it 155th in 2050 and 160th in 2100. It is overtaken by Equatorial Guinea in 2024, Bahrain in 2031 and Kosovo in 2038.

Latvia, every age in every year

Each column is a year and each row an age; the denser the ink in a cell, the more people. Everyone born in the same year climbs one 45° diagonal, so famines, baby booms and migration show up as streaks. Select a cell to follow its generation.

Who does the work in Latvia

Latvia had the most working-age people it is ever expected to have in 1989: 1,781,030 people aged 15–64, against 1,185,460 in 2023.

How to read this: take 100 people of working age — the orange row — and the two rows under it are the children (teal) and the people of 65 and over (violet) who lived alongside them in 2023.

Fewer than 50 dependants live alongside every 100 people aged 15–64 in 37 years: 1955–1967, 1981–1990 and 1999–2012.

LVA · arrivals minus departures

Who arrives in Latvia, and who leaves

In 2020–2025 Latvia gains 4,448 people a year: everyone who arrives, minus everyone who leaves. The age at which that happens most is 60–64, at 407 a year more arriving than leaving.

more arrive than leave   more leave than arrive

How to read this: age runs left to right, babies to 100. A blue square above the line means arrivals outnumber departures at that age, an orange square below it means the opposite. The figures are the UN's projection for 2020–2025; nobody recorded migration by age before 2020.

In the years that were counted, 1950–2023, the most it gained in one year was 29,760 (1959) and the most it lost was 52,180 (1992).

In 2024, 220,471 people living in Latvia had been born in another country, 12 of every 100 people there, against 24 in 1990.
